ABT, SWAN LAKE, MET OPERA HOUSE, NEW YORK, MAY 1994 |
| From: NEW YORK POST, May 9, 1994 Dance Review by Clive Barnes DIAMOND JUBILEE SHOWCASES CLASSIC...People sometimes ask where are the superstars of yesteryear - often implying that like yesteryears snows they are melted - yet look across the Lincoln Center plaza to the Metropolitan Opera House, where American Ballet Theater has been putting its own two undeniable superstars of the 90s - the Georgian Nina Ananiashvili and the Argentinian Julio Bocca - into sweetly curvetting orbit. In Kevin MacKenzies Swan Lake (another paradigm of tradition) on Saturday afternoon, the softly dazzling Ananiashvili and the astonishing Bocca (now peerless among male virtuosi) danced with a mixture of passion, artistry and technique it would be hard, virtually impossible, to beat. I suppose Margot and Rudolf surpassed them ... but even then perhaps time and distance lend and even evoke, enchantment. Superstars may not melt, but memories can.
