WHIRLING IN A FAMILIAR DUET MADE NEW

Stars came out two by two on Thursday night at the Metropolitan Opera House when American Ballet Theater presented another of its programs of short works, each featuring two of its principal dancers.

The most flamboyantly spectacular performances came from Nina Ananiashvili and Julio Bocca in the pas de deux from Marius Petipa’s Don Quixote. This familiar showpiece can sometimes seem corny. But Ms. Ananiashvili and Mr. Bocca made it fun. Dancing with clarity as well as enthusiasm, they emphasized all the high lifts and long-held balances. And they whirled dizzyingly through the turns...
